Limited work of twenty series (I-XX) containing
250 copies each. Number 150 of 250, series XI.
King's interpretation of fourteen of the
characters from Chaucer's Prologue combines an old text with modern
illustrations in rich, vibrant colours. The influence of the artist's
interest in the African mask is apparent in the art forms in which
he blends symbolism and mediaeval heraldry.
First printed by Editions Alecto in 1966, this new, limited edition
was published by the artist himself when he
formed
Circle
Press in 1967. As in the original version, the old English text has
been hand set in Monotype Plantin II0 and is accompanied by 15 full
page prints.
Elephant folio, 57pp, illustrations in colour.
Printed
on Queen Ann Antique
paper, hard-bound in blue cloth cover with slip case, silver lettering
on
spine.
Original
screen
print in 3 colours initialled and numbered XI by the artist with
poem "Webbe" by Roy Fisher, in a separate portfolio.
Included with this copy is an advertising pamphlet from Circle
Press Publications and a separate sheet describing the book from
Eaton
House Publishers, London.
